A small team from 304 (Hastings) Squadron attend RIAT as part of a much larger group. The Cadets camp for a week and during the Air Show are given many different tasks such as: Setting up the Jubilee Gardens (1800 deck chairs), selling Programmes, crowd line duties.
Cadets meet air crew from all over the world, have spare time to watch the air show and visit the aircraft.
As a reward for all of their hard work there
is a barbeque/party on the final night.
RIAT is a very popular activity with all Cadets even though it is hard work.

Wing Field Day

Held once a year, Wing Field Day is a chance for all Squadrons in Sussex Wing to compete against each other in the following disciplines:

Drill - Cadets must perform a series of drill movements together, in perfect time and in the order given to them by their flight commander. Each team is marked on the standard of their uniform, how well the drill movements are carried out and if they have performed as a team. They are marked by a panel of judges and the team with the highest marks wins. The winners go on to represent Sussex Wing in a Regional competition and possibly nationally in the Air Cadet organisation.

Aircraft Modelling - Kits form scale model aircraft are judged on the quality of construction, painting and presentation.

Aircraft Recognition - Squadron teams must identify a set number of aircraft from images.

Shooting - Squadron teams compete against each other. The highest scoring team or individual can go on to represent Sussex at the Regional competition.

First Aid - Teams are given a mock situation to assess and are marked on their responses.

Other non-competitive activities - Abseiling, command tasks (using radios), obstacle course.

304 (Hastings) Squadron has in the past been in the top three squadrons for drill and has represented Sussex at Regional level for this and Aircraft Modelling.

Sports

The Squadron programme always includes a sports night. There are many sporting activities for Air Cadets throughout the year.
Again, 304 Squadron has a chance to compete against other Squadrons in Sussex.

If a Cadet excels at a particular sport they could be asked to represent not only Sussex but the Air Training Corps at the highest level.

The competitive sports are:

  • Swimming

  • Athletics

  • 5-a-side football

  • 11-a-side football (males only)

  • 5-a-side hockey (females only)

  • 11-a-side hockey (females only)

  • Rugby

  • Cross Country Running

  • Netball (females only)

Walking

- South Downs Challenge

The South Downs Challenge is an overnight 40-45 kilometre walk across the South Downs. Cadets must pass through regular check points throughout the night. Cadets may rest at the check points and cook themselves a meal at one of them. It is called the South Downs "Challenge" for a reason, as it tests the team-work, determination, fitness and map reading skills of each individual.
Adult staff members man all the check points and radio contact is maintained throughout the night.

- Nijmegen (Holland)

The Nijmegan March takes place every year in July in Holland. Teams of adults and Cadets walk 25 miles a day over 4 days. Teams from all over the world take part. Regular practice sessions start early in the year with short walks, gradually building up to 25 miles in a day. A qualifying weekend is held for final team selections. Cadets from 304 (Hastings) Squadron have taken part in this march.

- Folkestone Cadet March - Spitfire Walk

This event is held in May. Teams can choose to walk one of three distances between 12km and 40km. 304 (Hastings) Squadron has participated in this March for a number of years.
